Pedal for Alzheimer’s: From an Event to a Movement

April 16, 20253 min read

Pedal for Alzheimer’s was born out of passion, purpose, and a deep desire to make a difference. It all started in 2017 when Michelle Brooke-Marciniak and Josh Crisp joined forces, each bringing their own connection to a shared mission.

Josh Crisp had already founded “Pedal for Pat,” a 1,098-mile cycling event in honor of the legendary Coach Pat Summitt. His goal was to carry forward Summitt’s powerful legacy by raising awareness and funds for The Pat Summitt Foundation and The Pat Summitt Alzheimer’s Clinic. Inspired by her courage and strength in the face of Alzheimer’s, Crisp knew he could do more to amplify her platform.

At the same time, Michelle Brooke-Marciniak—who played under Summitt on the 1996 National Championship team at the University of Tennessee—learned about Pedal for Pat and immediately felt called to be a part of it.

After teaming up as co-chairs and witnessing the overwhelming success of the first Pedal for Pat event, Crisp and Brooke-Marciniak realized they were onto something much bigger. That’s when Pedal for Alzheimer’s was officially born.

While Coach Summitt’s legacy is at the heart of the organization, the mission has grown to include the stories and motivations of countless others. For many riders and supporters, it’s not just about one person—it’s about honoring grandparents, parents, and friends who have been affected by Alzheimer’s. That shared commitment to raising awareness, funding research, and supporting families is what drives the Pedal for Alzheimer’s community forward.

COMMITTED TO SEEKING A CURE FOR ALZHEIMER’S

Volunteers and Ambassadors are the heartbeat of the Pedal for Alzheimer’s team. Their passion and commitment help bring every event to life and push the mission forward.

Volunteers play a vital role by assisting with event registration, staffing nutrition stops along the routes, supporting logistics, and helping build connections through sponsorship outreach.

For cyclists who feel a strong connection to our mission, becoming an Ambassador is a powerful way to get involved. Ambassadors lead group rides in their local communities, fundraise, and use their voice and influence to spread awareness and inspire others to take action.
