Introduction: Honoring Knoxville's Black Heritage

Knoxville’s rich Black history is deeply rooted in the stories of resilience, leadership, and cultural contributions that have shaped the city. At the heart of this legacy is the Beck Cultural Exchange Center, a vital institution dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history and achievements of African Americans in Knoxville and beyond.

What is the Beck Cultural Exchange Center?

Founded in 1975, the Beck Cultural Exchange Center has become the historical hub for Black Heritage in East Tennessee. The center serves as a repository for Black history, preserving artifacts, documents, and photographs that tell the stories of past and present generations.

The mission of Beck is to research, collect, preserve, and promote African American history and Culture through exhibitions, educational programs, and community engagement. The center not only celebrates historical figures but also shines a light on contemporary leaders and changemakers within Knoxville’s Black community.

Beck Cultural Exchange Center Offerings

  • The Beck Archives: A vast collection of documents, photographs, and oral histories that provide insight into Knoxville’s Black history. 

  • Permanent & Special Exhibits: Showcasing significant events, influential figures, and movements that have shaped Black culture in Knoxville. 

  • Historic Home Restoration: Beck is leading the effort to restore the home of William Hastie, the first African American governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands and a pivotal figure in civil rights history.

  • Educational Programming: Workshops, lectures, and events designed to educate and inspire visitors of all ages.

The Impact on Knoxville's Black Community

The Beck Cultural Exchange Center is more than just a museum, it’s a living archive of black excellence, provides for education, and center for advocacy. 

Through its programs and initiatives, Beck:
